What is CARES?

The Child Aviation Restraint System or CARES for short is a harness-style child safety device from Kids Fly Safe. It is designed specially for airplanes and is certified in the US as having an equivalent level of safety to a car seat for all phases of flight. Already approved by all US carriers, CARES was given a seal of approval by Air Canada and WestJet in summer 2008. (For a complete list of airlines around the world that accept CARES, click here.)

CARES was invented by Louise Stoll, a grandmother of 9. The idea for the award-winning system first came to Louise when she watched her daughter struggling off a plane carrying a toddler in one arm and a 20 lb car seat and a diaper bag in the other while she was 7 months pregnant. She remembers saying to her husband, “There has to be a better way!” Eight years later the first Child Aviation Restraint System rolled off the production line.

CARES weighs just 1 lb, fits in a 6" stuff sack, fits all airplane seats and takes a mere 1 minute to install. It is made of the same industrial-strength webbing as your own seat belt and is engineered to the highest aviation-safety standards. It is designed specifically for children aged 1 to 4 years who weigh between 22 and 44 lbs (10 to 20 kg) and who are 40 inches (100 cm) or less in height.

The children must be travelling in their own seat. Children in this age range are old enough to be in their own seats, but are too small for the seat belt alone to protect them. Their bodies cannot withstand jolts from turbulence, much less emergency situations, and they flail forward or slide beneath the seat belt if they are not held securely in place.

CARES is the first and only harness type Aviation Child Safety Device to be certified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as an alternative to a car seat.

“The Federal Aviation Administration strongly urges you to secure your child in an appropriate restraint based on weight and size. Turbulence can happen with little or no warning. And when it does, the safest place for your child is in a Certified Restraint.”

What is the Baby B'Air?

The Baby B’Air is the only safety solution for lap held babies who fly. Baby B'Air is an FAA-approved quilted cotton flight vest for your newborn to 2 year old child that is travelling on your lap. The vest attaches your child to your lap belt to keep her tethered to you during a flight. It cannot be used during takeoff, taxiing and landing – it is only for use during the flight portion of your trip (where 90% of turbulence occurs). The device has FAA approval and can be used on US airlines but it is not approved by Transport Canada.

Transport Canada's current position is as follows: "While some [Canadian] operators may permit the use of these or similar devices during flight, the infant would have to be removed from the device and properly restrained whenever seat belts are required to be worn."

Baby B'Air Quilted Flight VestThe vest is made by Baby B'Air in Dallas, Texas. They come in two sizes: SMALL for infants up to 6 months (up to 40 lbs with a head circumference of less than 16 in/40.5 cm) and LARGE for babies aged 6 months to 2 years (up to 40 lbs with a head circumference between 16 and 20 in/40.5 and 51 cm).

The Baby B'Air costs $25 per trip to rent and $45 to purchase from Little Traveller. We ship accross Canada.
